By Kris Jones What do you think of when someone says Dallas Cowboys? Troy Aikman? Tony Romo? Michael Irvin? Their unfavorable seasons the past couple of years? Well, many people think it’s time to change the way you think about the previously laughed at “America’s Team”. The Cowboys have been hugely successful this year, thanks to a fearsome pass defense and surprisingly successful offense. How is the offense surprisingly successful, you say? Well, the shocking emergence of rookie quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott has lead the Cowboys to a 13-3 record and a spot in the playoffs.
Dak was taken in the 4th round of the draft and is already being touted as the solution to injury prone Romo and a weak backup bench at QB. After the stint of average performances from Romo, the coaches decided to throw Dak into the fray. After a close 20-19 loss to the Giants, the Cowboys started a 11 game win streak with top tier performances from the quarterback. Another rookie worth mentioning is his partner in crime, Ezekiel Elliott. Elliott may look like a power back on paper with a 6’0”, 225 frame, but, he can turn on the jets or show his hands some plays. The former first round pick out of Ohio State is already a marquee name in the league, along with Dak. Since then, every non-aligned fan has been on the Dallas hype train. But, one question still remains; can that hype stay until next season for “America’s Team?” The term coined for rookies heading into their second year of play is called the “Sophomore Slump.” Why is the sophomore slump being referenced? Because it hits most, if not all, rookies in the league. An example of the sophomore slump is Odell Beckham Jr.’s 2015 season. It was the same old Beckham show, but huge concerns emerged about his attitude and maturity on the field, spawned by former Panthers corner Josh Norman. I do expect the sophomore slump to hit the two, but, not as hard as many other rookies. So, keep your eyes on the ‘Boys in the playoffs and the offseason, as they try their best to come out of mediocrity and into the spotlight once again.
