It was Super Tuesday once again, and on April 26, 2016 five states headed into their primary elections: Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. It was a sweeping grand slam for GOP frontrunner, Donald Trump, who won all five state primaries, successfully closing in on the 1,237 delegates that stand between him and the GOP nomination. Ted Cruz and John Kasich have announced that they will be banding together, strategically mapping out what states to campaign in to ensure that Trump does not get the numbered delegates needed for his nomination. In a victory speech delivered from Trump Towers in Manhattan, Trump stated that their pact was, “pathetic.” On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton won four out of the five states, with Sanders taking home Rhode Island with 55% of the vote. Adding to her win of 204 delegates, her already strong lead is pushing Sanders further away from the chance of a Democratic nomination. At this point, Sanders does not have room to fail and must win at least 60% of the vote in the remaining primaries in order to secure his place in the race. In local news, Sanders did win Berks County by 50.7%, and Trump won by 59.8% of the vote. Sanders was the only candidate who campaigned directly in Berks County at a Reading Town Hall rally on April 21, while Trump campaigned an hour away in the state capital, Harrisburg, each rally drawing a substantial amount of Wilson student attendance. Trump has noticed the margins by which Sanders is falling behind, and opted to give some advice to the Vermont Senator. “Run as an independent.” He stated that the Democrats are being “horrible” to Sanders, and that he should run as an independent to “show them up.” Yet Sanders has committed to the Democratic party and has sworn to back up the nominee despite the circumstances, and will continue to run as a Democrat. The odds are looking for the race to end with a Clinton-Trump showdown.
