Q: One of my classes just got a new teacher and the first thing he had to do was grade an essay. Because we still had the old teacher when the essay was assigned and many students feel they did not do well, a lot of the kids in my class are saying that he doesn’t grade fairly. I did not do awfully, so I don’t know what to make of it. He doesn’t seem like a bad teacher, but what if my grades start to suffer? Would that be my fault or the teacher’s? A: Give this new teacher time. Transitioning between teachers is tough for everyone. This new teacher just got thrown into another teacher's classroom. He may have a completely different idea of how to run the class and may have forgotten that things don’t work as planned. Eventually he will learn how your class used to be structured, will get to know all of you, and try to teach you the best he can. You will learn his teaching and grading style, but that all takes time. While adjusting, try to be as helpful as possible. Tell him how it used to work, but also be open to his ideas of the class. You might find you like it better. If it does get worse, bring it up with your counselor or another trusted teacher. Please do that as a last resort though. This is a rough situation, and honestly, grades don’t matter as much as we are told they matter. You can make it through half a year.
