Q: I’m not bragging or anything, but I get pretty good grades in my classes. I’ve always been a good student, but for some reason, my grades are not what they used to be. I’m still working the same amount, maybe even more. The problem is my teacher has no idea what she’s talking about half of the time. She can’t explain concepts very well, and whenever we ask questions in class, she kind of just avoids the question. I know she’s trying, but it’s hurting me in the process. I feel like I’m not learning as much as I should be. Please help. A: A teacher that is sub par is not a fun experience, but what I have found is when you get a teacher that is learning how to teach, whether in general or a particular subject, you stop paying attention in class or stop putting in the same effort. The best remedy is to take responsibility. It is tough, and you may have to put in more time. Ask friends for notes from another teacher, use internet resources, or ask as many questions as you can to the teacher. No one likes that answer, I understand. It’s hard and not an exciting option, but it your true concern is learning, then you should be fine. Those who want to learn usually do.
