By Madelyn GreeneYou and your friend decide to travel. You decide to bring along your friend’s sister in your travels, who soon becomes the love of your life. This instance was far to true for Wilson High’s Mr. Dunkelberger. (Photo Courtesy of Mr. Dunkelberger) Every summer, Mr.Dunkelberger trips across the United States and visits different states. One year Dunkelberger, his friend’s sister, Alex and his buddy Doug took their 1996 Subaru outback on a trip to California. The Subaru had probably over 1500 miles on it. It was salvaged and later dubbed “sledge.” Doug had taken a sledgehammer to the bumper which is how it got its name. They planned to go on a 3 week trip to California. They went straight across through colorado and back through Montana and around. Dunkelberger took a chance on Alex. When he decided to bring her along Mr.Dunkelberger told his friend that if she ended up being annoying that he was allowed to punch him in the face. And he is big and scary and he would have destroyed my life.” They had to stop in Chicago because Dunkelberger had found a guy on Craigslist that was willing to pay them $300 to deliver dishes from Allentown to Chicago. On their way there they were stopped by a police officer. They got to Colorado around 2:30 am and were out in a parking lot, eating salami sandwiches and swinging around a wooden sword that they had brought along. “Why wouldn't you travel with a 5-foot wooden sword?” They were approached by yet another police officer and they ended up getting kicked out of the parking lot because it was closed overnight. The wilderness was not closed so they ended up grabbing their things and starting to hike. They hiked up and down a small mountain and then walked back to their car. They went to stay with some friends in Colorado. One day they were climbing on a plateau in front of the Rockies. They were climbing at around 5-6 o’clock at night. They were sitting on top of some rocks and they looked across from them and saw a peak in the distance they thought was really cool. So Dunkelberger asked one of his buddies, one that lived out in Colorado, what it was, it was Longs Peak. So out of nowhere, they decided to climb it.
