By Rachel KovachOn Dec. 5, 2019, a group of about 40 Wilson students that are taking a level five language this year took a trip to the Big Apple. It was an early start to try and avoid traffic, and we made great time getting there, arriving at The Metropolitan Museum of Art at 10:30 am. It was the perfect day to be in New York, as the sun was shining brightly, and it was not as cold as an average December day. We were all welcomed by some Met employees that gave us the guidelines for how we should use our time in the museum, where to meet when the time came to leave, and which exhibits to go to. As soon as the welcoming committee was done with their instructions, we all split up with our respective friend groups and ventured through the massive museum. Everything I saw in the museum was beautiful! There were ornate fountains, statues, abstract paintings, and even ancient jewelry. (Photo Courtesy of Rachel Kovach) After about an hour and a half in the museum, which was definitely not enough time to see all of it, we went back to the bus to have lunch and then made our way to see “The Phantom of the Opera” on Broadway! We arrived at our theatre, The Majestic, with plenty of time to spare, and were welcomed with a couple of snow flurries while waiting in line to get inside. We went up two flights of stairs to get to our seats and got settled in for the show. We all had the most perfect bird’s eye view of the stage from our seats! I had heard many times before that “Phantom” is an absolutely incredible show to see, but I was not at all prepared for how amazing it was. The acting, and the breathtakingly beautiful singers and dancers along with the perfectly planned stage movements made for a show that I will never forget. The directors of this show have everything down to a precise science by now, especially because “The Phantom of the Opera” is the longest-running Broadway show, opening on Jan. 26, 1988! As soon as the show was over, the French and Spanish students split up and went to their respective restaurants. All of the Spanish students went to an amazing Cuban restaurant called Havana Central. From the outside, the restaurant did not look like much, but we were all amazed at how spacious it was when we all got inside. It was beautifully decorated for the holidays, too! We were led to the upper level of the restaurant where we had two long tables to accommodate all of us. For dinner, the majority of the group had either the vegetable paella or the chicken and rice dish (arroz con pollo). I had arroz con pollo, and it was amazing, and the portion was big enough to feed at least two people! Once we were all finished with dinner, we thanked all of our waiters and the owners of the restaurant, then went back out to the streets so we could walk to Rockefeller Center. (Photo Courtesy of Rachel Kovach) The tree lighting ceremony had just taken place the night before, so it was very crowded with people all waiting to get the perfect photo opportunity with the tree! This year, the tree is about 70 feet tall, has approximately 50,000 lights, and the star on top of the tree weighs 900 pounds and has three million Swarovski crystals in it. That’s a lot of sparkle! We stayed in Rockefeller Center for a while to let everyone get their pictures before heading back to the bus to head back to school. After a long, very eventful and fun day, we arrived back at school around 10:30 pm, concluding our New York Trip adventure!
