By Sara WilliamsonIt’s that time of year again! The leaves are changing, pumpkins are getting carved, decorations of witches, skeletons and spiders are being put up. That’s right, it’s October, which means Halloween season! It’s also time for Haunts to start up again. ShocktoberFest has already begun its haunts and will be going on until the 9th of Nov. Ticket booths open at 6 p.m. and end at 10 p.m.; attractions open at 7 p.m. (Photo Courtesy Of shocktoberfest.com) There are four main attractions at ShocktoberFest. These attractions are the Zombie Safari Haunted Hayride, which you can upgrade with the paintball option that allows you to shoot zombies at certain points of the ride. The Prison of The Dead, a walkthrough attraction that takes you through the Willow Glen State Penitentiary, a 50,000 square ft Haunted House. The Unknown 2.0 is another walkthrough attraction that explores some of your worst fears and phobias. The last main attraction is the Ground Assault Zombie Laser Tag; in Ground Assault, you are given a laser gun to try and control the escaping zombies. There are more activities that ShocktoberFest provides such as The Zombie Experience where you can become a zombie, and The Zombie Night Run.
I’ve been to ShocktoberFest many times before, but this year I went with my good friend Bakhita. This year they’ve added a new unavoidable area called Midway Massacre. Midway Massacre is a foggy path after the ticket booths. To get in line for the main attractions you have to walk through the Midway, so Bakhita and I put on our brave faces and began to make our way through the Midway. As we were walking we noticed a man start to walk towards us, then out of nowhere another person rushed us from the left as another person came at us from behind. I grabbed Bakhita’s arm and dragged her to the end of the Midway to avoid the three zombies. The Midway startled both of us and really helps to get patrons’ adrenaline pumping before they’re even in the actual attractions. I thought it was a very good addition to Shocktober Fest’s attractions. The next attraction we went to was the Prison of The Dead. We got on the bus that takes the group to the Prison. We finally got into the Prison with about eight other people. For the most part, the Prison hasn’t had many changes throughout the years I’ve been there. We walked down an old hallway and as we were walking the lights started flickering then just completely shut off. We had to blindly make our way through the hallway to the next room. As we started to walk through the room a door slammed open and a guard came in and started yelling at our group as another guard started cackling in the corner. Our group quickly exited the room only to be engulfed into darkness once more. We fumbled our way through the darkness to the next rooms. We went through the disgusting blood-covered showers and bathroom out to the boiler with zombies randomly jumping out and snarling or screaming at us. We were forced to crouch through almost pitch black tunnels with zombies sometimes making grunts and growls as we tried to pass. As we got closer to the end I could hear the rev of a chainsaw, and at that moment my heart dropped to the bottom of my stomach. Each step I took toward the end of the Prison filled me with dread knowing what waited for me. After what seemed like an eternity we finally got to what I was dreading so much, the Slaughter Box. Just as we got to the Slaughter Box, a zombie rushed us with a chainsaw. He cornered Bakhita and me, taunting us with the chainsaw until he got bored. Once he moved out of the way I pushed past some people then I was home free. I’d give ShocktoberFest a 6/10 for some good scares and nostalgia. It’s a nice haunt for people who have never been to a haunt before, and it’s a nice laid back haunt that (probably) won’t give you a panic attack.
