By Clara Webber One of the most devastating things to happen to a person is to find out that they have cancer. Anthony Myers, a sophomore at Berks Catholic High School, discovered this in October of this year. At the age of 16, Myers was discovered to have brain cancer that would require surgery. In the beginning of December, a fundraiser was held to help raise money for the Myers family.
Also at the beginning of December, a Wilson student held a fundraiser as a former cancer patient. Another sophomore, Seth Wooldridge, held a remission party at the high school to help raise funds for other people suffering from pancreatic cancer. When asked why he wanted to have the fundraiser, Wooldridge said, “I thought, well, they helped me, I might as well help them.” Over the years, Wooldridge said he had met a lot of people like him, and he was given a lot of support. It seemed he wanted to hold the fundraiser for those people. He also said that he wanted to have the fundraiser because he didn’t see many fundraisers in the area. One person that especially inspired him was Mark Ruffalo. Wooldridge said that he had a brain tumor and also beat it, just like him. Wooldridge has also said that he has enjoyed events like THON and the camp that he used to go to where he felt welcome. The feeling of having a family and people to support you can be the most amazing feeling in the world. Wooldridge was discovered to have cancer on July 17, 2012. He ended up missing a lot of his fourth grade year and, through surgery and recovery, the cancer kept him from playing any sort of contact sport that he wanted to play. Luckily, he did get to play a little bit of baseball before being diagnosed. In an interview, he said he would have wanted to play football. Now that he has gone through remission, it is still not advised that he play any contact sports. In the end, the stories of Anthony Myers and Seth Wooldridge are inspiring and an encouragement for everyone. It shows that no matter what kind of life you live, you can still find a way to make the most of it and even give back.
