By Ava Breslin Pop singer Sam Smith announced via Instagram and Twitter on Sept. 13, 2019, that their new pronouns are they/them. This is following a March interview with Jameela Jamil in which they said, “When I saw the words ‘nonbinary’ and ‘genderqueer’ and I read into it and I heard these people speaking, I thought f--- — that is me” (NBCnews.com) but it was not a formal announcement. (Photo Courtesy of BBC.com) Sam Smith first came into the public in 2012 when the electronic dance group Disclosure released the song “Latch” which used Smith’s vocals. Their work in the song “blew up” in the media and they eventually released their first single “Lay Me Down” in 2013. Continuing with features, Smith worked with Naughty Boy to create the song “La La La” which soared to the number one singles spot in the UK at the time. Following these hits, they released their first EP “Nirvana,” their single “Money On My Mind” and finally their full debut album “In The Lonely Hour” on May 26, 2014. Smith has produced two albums, one “extended play” and seven singles since their 2012 debut. They have won four Grammys as well as a BBC sound of 2014 award and Brit’s Critics Choice Award in 2014. In May 2014, Smith came out to the public as gay after the ending of a relationship with model Jonathan Zeizel. Their next albums became a direct reflection of the person they wanted to be, saying that their newest album “The Thrill of it All” exemplified “the gay guy I've become." (News.com) This was the first time Smith spoke out about their sexuality directly to the public. In their emotional and vulnerable Instagram and Twitter post on September 13, 2019, they said that “I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.” In addition, they stated that “I understand there will be many mistakes and misgendering but all I ask is you please please try.” (Photo Courtesy of out.com)
