By James Brennan On the cold night of November 10, a football game took place at Gurski stadium, but it was not an ordinary football game; this was the annual Powder Puff football game where the senior girls face off against the underclassmen girls. Both teams, of course, wanted to win, but they were also playing for a bigger cause; they were playing to help raise money and awareness for Wilson High School's Mini-THON. Coming into this game, the underclassmen were the underdogs because the seniors have held the title for the past couple of years, and the seniors looked to be an insurmountable mountain to the underclassmen again. During the game, Jayme Ruppert led the senior team and was unstoppable in the backfield with a multi-touchdown game. On the other side of the ball Zakiyah Winfield, a junior at Wilson, provided a spark to the underclassmen offense when they were down 16-0 early in the game. When Winfield entered the game in the first half at quarterback, she helped her team score two quick touchdowns to make the score 16-12. As soon as it looked like the underclassmen were going to make a comeback, the senior defense made some adjustments and held the underclassmen scoreless for the rest of the game. Ruppert and the seniors were just too much for the underclassmen to handle and won by a final score of 30-12. The underclassmen were a little disappointed with the outcome of the game, but the most important thing is that they had fun while playing and helped raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer. Carlie Agentowicz, a junior at Wilson, said, "Of course I wanted to win and beat the seniors, but all that matters is that we did this for the kids." Wilson's annual Mini-THON is a huge contributor toward the Four Diamonds Fund, which contributes to funding childhood cancer research and lessening the burden treatment costs for families. Last year, Wilson’s Mini-THON raised $63,094.80 for families with kids that are suffering from cancer. This amount was raised due to the help of all the small fundraisers throughout the year. To reach Wilson's goal again this year, the Wilson community needs to come out and attend all the fundraisers leading up to Mini-THON. Powder Puff was only one of the many fundraisers and there are many more to come. Alexandra Katrinak, a junior at Wilson who participated in Powder Puff this year said,"I would like to thank all of the people that came out tonight and donated to this great cause and I hope to see you at the many other events throughout the year." If you did not get a chance to come out and watch the Powder Puff game, make sure to attend the other fundraisers and come out next year to see if the new class of seniors can retain the title.
