By Clara WeberWhile Ben Houck may seem to be your average theater kid, there is more to him than meets the eye. Houck doesn’t just act; he sings, dances, juggles and is even learning to ride a unicycle. The sophomore takes part in many Wilson activities, including concert band, choir, select choir, and theater. In addition to school activities, Houck also is very active in his community. At Yocum Institute, he takes hip-hop lessons and will soon be taking tap dancing. In addition to dance at Yocum, he also acts both there and at the Ephrata Performing Arts Center. Most recently, Ben has been cast in a production of “Newsies”, through which he puts in twenty-seven hours of rehearsals each week. As for his future, Houck has already started thinking about what he wants to do after high school. While at first, he wanted to go to college to major in musical theater, he decided that he would rather get right into acting. Over his summers he would like to perform at Hershey with a juggling act, then after high school begin auditioning to be on Broadway. Even though he wants to go into acting first, school and education are still very important to him as he is taking many honors and AP classes currently.
Ben said that his former role model was Casey Neistat, a YouTuber who dropped out of school, began filming videos and commercials, and even started his own business. Houck is inspired by Casey and his drive to do something he is passionate about. More recently, Houck’s friend Corey has become an inspiration to him. Corey works in marketing, but also does theater with Ben often. Outside of performing and theater, Ben enjoys weightlifting and biking through Grings Mill. Every week he dedicates six hours to weightlifting and getting his body in shape. Ben is an inspirational student himself, seeing as he does various fun and adventurous things. He inspires others to cool things and get involved more. Not only that, but he motivates others to go after their dreams and follow what they love.
