By Maggie Foight Wilson’s literary magazine, “Ink,” recently hosted a coffeehouse in the Lower House drama room during Bulldog Period. The event took place on Dec. 7th to raise money for printing costs. Donuts, coffee, and hot chocolate were available to all who had paid the $3.00 entry fee. The magazine accepts short stories, poetry, photography, artwork, dramas, and essays to be published in their biannual booklets. About 15 students look through all entries and determine which submissions deserve a first-place monetary prize and which deserve honorable mentions. To submit, a student just has to be a student at Wilson High School with original work. The link can be found at http://tinyurl.com/hcan8qr. To the magazine’s staff, the first fundraiser of the year was a success! Over $100 was raised for publishing, which would put a sizeable dent in the costs.
With Camryn Sheasley as the emcee, the students that came were entertained with humor and wit, while the actual performances were well-prepared and deftly executed. Writers shared their writing, poets recited their poetry, and singers sang their own songs or karaoke versions of popular songs. At this coffeehouse in particular, only a portion of the acts were able to perform, but there may be another session in the future to finish and continue with more students’ performance. There was one spoken word poem, “OCD,” that spoke of a love that one man found and then lost, but still longs for. Most of the other performances were songs, like renditions of “Stay” by Rihanna, “Story of My Life” by One Direction, and “Skyscraper” by Demi Lovato. Others included “On My Own” from “Les Miserables” and “Riptide” by Vance Joy, the latter played on the ukulele. There was also one of Wilson’s own bands performing, Boundaries, which included several juniors who have recently published a new album. The fundraiser was extremely well-orchestrated and put together, all thanks to the extensive work and coordination of the literary magazine’s overseers, Mrs. Fish and Mrs. Flanagan. Congratulations to both the amazing performers and the literary magazine staff for a successful first coffeehouse!
