By Sarah Larkin At seven o’clock on the night of January 20th, it didn’t matter whether you were from Wilson or Mifflin because everyone came together to make a change. At the annual Dunking for Diamonds basketball game, students from both districts cheered for their favorite teachers while also supporting a good cause. The game was a showdown between the Wilson and Mifflin faculty in the arena of a basketball court. The purpose was to raise money for childhood cancer. Tickets were sold upon entrance and the proceeds of the game were split evenly between the Wilson and Mifflin Mini-THONs. The game had a great turnout - who wouldn’t want to see their teachers play (or attempt to play) basketball? The Wilson section was a little lackluster in comparison to the larger crowd of Mifflin students, though, who even brought their school’s marching band.
Some of the players included Mr. Blass, Mr. Brooks, Miss Elbin, Miss Dolente, Mr. Filer, Mr. Melograna, and many more of Wilson’s esteemed teachers. The MVP for the night had to be the physics teacher, Mr. Melograna, who scored the bulk of the points for Wilson. Mr. Melograna’s physics-loving partner in crime, Mr. Brooks, was a close second. Obviously, being able to calculate the trajectory of a basketball towards a basket was beneficial for the Wilson Physics Department. But even with the combined efforts of the amazing Wilson staff and their spectacular basketball skills, Mifflin still managed to beat Wilson. The Mifflin faculty far outscored the Wilson staff resulting in a separation of over 20 points at the end of the fourth period. Even with such a blowout, the Wilson students cheered until the very last buzzer. After the game, there weren’t any long faces even from the Wilson teachers who had just lost probably the most important game of their lives. Everyone knew the significance of what they had done: helped fight childhood cancer. Though they might not have won, the teachers did something valiant in even just playing so that money could be raised to assist children in need. In the end, though, winning was a matter of pride and the Wilson staff will surely be practicing tirelessly in order to get revenge on the Mifflin faculty next year!
