By Jenny Tang Cooper obtained his bachelor’s from West Chester University and his master’s degree from Messiah College.
As a very musically-oriented person, he now teaches piano, band, theory and jazz courses at Wilson. When asked what his favorite part of teaching was, Cooper did not even have to think twice. “I love interacting with my students and seeing them happy.” He added, “I have so many great moments as a teacher. I love any time there is a unanimity of feeling. As a teacher, I do my best to create these moments of connectedness for everyone.” What sets Cooper apart from other teachers? “My sense of humor, my ability to relate to other people, probably,” he answered. I believe any of his students could agree. Cooper utilizes these strengths profoundly well in his teaching methods. Always providing a safe and relaxed atmosphere in his classroom, he makes it a point to get to know his students and listen to what everyone has to say. A lot of other things help him to relate to students as well. Cooper explained that music was something he “never had to think about” and always enjoyed. However, he has numerous other hobbies that keep him occupied. “I love to cook. I love doing the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzles. I love to read. I love spending time with my four sons and my wife. I also love South Park.” Interestingly enough, Cooper’s own high school experience was much different from the one he tries to help every student experience today. “I wish I could do it over again. I was really insecure as a kid. I really think I missed out; once I got to college, all of a sudden I think I woke up.” He certainly doesn’t live in the past, however. Another fun fact about Cooper? He is fascinated with pop culture and the way it permanently stays evolving. “I really do try to pay as much attention to current pop culture as I can. I don’t resent it. I think each decade, each era, has great things about it. I try to find what’s great about each thing.” In Cooper’s classroom, he makes sure both his love for music and love for his students is embodied. As a student of his, I can, without a doubt, say that he has left a positive, lasting impact on my high school career. There’s not a better feeling than being able to laugh freely after a long day of tiring classes before allowing the soothing chords of the piano to fill your ears.
