By: Alina RodriguezOn Sunday, March 24, 2019, Wilson Hosted the sixth annual Iron Chef Competition and Benefit Auction. Sound bubbled from the crowded walkways of the Wilson gymnasium and indoor track as people milled about, eating foods from local vendors and voting for next year’s Iron Chef competitors. Local talent, both professional and from the Wilson middle schools were displayed and available for tasting during community hours.
Community members were able to vote on the people’s choice restaurants, enter for raffles or walk through vendors’ lanes. Vendors’ lanes were full of local restaurants and companies, anywhere from the 3rd generational Betty’s Classics Deli Salads to the newer Good Life Organics juice bar. People had the opportunity to try new foods and drinks from their local areas. Student performances were also exhibited during this time, filling the gym with lively music and song. Bellies full, people then gathered in the auditorium for the Iron Chef Competition. Competitors Mitchell Kriebel from Gourmand, Mike Martino from Adelphia Seafood and Tim Twiford from Redner’s Markets competed for the Iron Chef title during this year’s competition. The three chosen ingredients for the competition were pork, pineapple and butternut squash. The chefs were then surprised with another ingredient: caramel candy squares. Everything had to be incorporated into a well-rounded, mouthwatering dish judged for its flavor, creativity, display and presentation. Two judging spots were auctioned off to the audience right before the competition started, creating an exciting atmosphere for the audience. After an enrapturing 35 minute competition, where all competitors made fantastically delicious dishes, the judges, both from the audience and previously chosen, had a decision to make. After careful deliberation in a private room, Mike Martino from Adelphia Seafood miraculously took the Wilson Iron Chef Title for the second year in a row, automatically including him in the competition for 2020 as the defending champion. When asked about how he felt before the Iron Chef began, Martino said, “I just love this competition.” Even though he was excited to compete, he also went in with a game plan. “I decided to go with a Polynesian theme,” he said. This theme won him the competition and was inspired by his years traveling and experiencing different culinary styles in different countries. Another big win for him was that the winner from the earlier voting showed Adelphia Seafood was People’s Choice champion, so Martino had not only won the Iron chef competition two years in a row, but the restaurant he worked for was also the People’s choice for next year. The Still Playin’ Distillery was the runner up, meaning that both they and Adelphia Seafood will be invited to compete in Wilson 's Iron Chef competition next year.
