By: Sara Williamson On Sunday, Aug. 26, two people were killed in a shooting. Eleven others were wounded in the shooting in Jacksonville, Florida during a gaming tournament. 13 shots were fired before the live stream ended. After the shooter was done he proceeded to kill himself. David Katz, age 24, was confirmed as the shooter. The men who were killed are Elijah Clayton, age 22, and Taylor Robertson, age 28. There was no real reason described but most people are suspecting that after losing to two other gamers in the tournament that Katz was pushed by the rage of losing. During the tournament, Katz was described as "very, very focused"(The Washington Post) and one who keeps to himself. One gamer said “[He was here] all weekend,” the man said. “He had shades on, he didn’t speak to anybody. Even after we played…I went to shake his hand and just tell him good game and he just looked at me. He didn’t say anything.”(The New York Post)
One victim, Marquis Williams, described the shooting. “Everyone running for their lives. People were being trampled. People were hiding, everyone was screaming in fear.” Katz had recently bought (legally) two firearms in Maryland (a state with the strictest gun laws). He brought one 9 mm pistol and a .45 caliber handgun, along with extra ammunition. One of the weapons had an aftermarket laser-sight attached. David was able to get a gun and bring it into the convention center, even though he was hospitalized twice in his adolescence and put into psychiatric facilities and that he was prescribed antipsychotic and antidepressant medications. During the livestream, one can see a red dot appear on one of the competitors before shots are heard. His parents' bitter divorce may suggest that Katz psychological problems started more than a decade ago.
