The House impeachment managers completed their impeachment process and have delivered the articles of impeachment to the Senate to vote on as the next step.
Currently the Senate is in its first week of impeachment trials. the articles have been read and the swearing-in of Chief Justice John Roberts followed. Donald Trump is the third president to be impeached, after Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. Many have said that this is a politically driven impeachment process. This is due to the political divisions in the house and the Senate, where the House consists of mainly Democrats and the Senate consists of mainly Republicans. Therefore, both Democrats and Republicans have individual opinions on how this issue is being handled and the overall transparency of the entire impeachment process. On Monday, Jan 27, Alan Dershowitz, member of Trump's defense team, began to make a case that these charges were unconsitutional as they "did not violate a federal crime." (USAToday). Republicans strongly criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats, for they said there was a ‘rushed process’ to impeach Trump in the House, only to delay sending the articles to the Senate for nearly a month. Pelosi wished to wait until Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell outlined how the Senate planned to conduct a trial, but he refrained from an explanation. An additional concern was raised that the trial will spill over into February and even extend to February 4th, which is the date Trump is scheduled to deliver his State of the Union address. White House officials told reporters on Wednesday they do not believe a trial will go beyond two weeks. Currently, the Senate has heard from Trump's defense team as of the morning of Jan 27 as Alan Dershowitz tries to make the case that his charges do not align with constitutional impeachable offenses; treason, bribery, or high crimes and misdemeanors.
