By: Amelia FortunatoWilson High School's Mini-THON raised a total of $93,047.38, which was revealed at the end of the event that lasted from Feb. 23 to Feb. 24. Mini-THON is an event created by the Four Diamonds Foundation to raise money to support, assist and advocate for children and their families who suffer from pediatric cancer. Wilson's contribution was made possible by months of fund-raising, all culminating with the Mini-THON event.
Before this event took place, many students had to spend countless days devoting their time to its preparation which starts soon after the previous year’s event ends. Mrs. McDonough, one of the club’s head advisors and a Wilson High School teacher, explained the event and its purpose. “Mini-THON is a 12-hour event where participants are required to stand. There are games, music, activities and food. The ultimate goal is to raise money for pediatric cancer and the Four Diamonds Fund,” Mrs. McDonough said. It is a lively and energetic event for a good cause. High school students are allowed to stay overnight, while the public can come by to play games and have a good time during community hours. For small children they have a bouncy house and small games like a bean bag toss, while for the older kids they have games like the dunking contest. Everyone is invited to dance and enjoy all of the food and merchandise for sale. Wilson's Mini-THON is known to raise quite a lot of funds "FTK," or for the kids. Mrs. McDonough explains that each year, more and more money is raised by the Wilson community. “We raised the most last year,” she said, referring to the $94,000 raised at last year's event. Each participating student is required to raise at least $40 to attend the event, which helps Mini-THON monetarily. Not only is Mini-THON a fun place to gather with friends, but students have the chance to help those needing it the most. Pediatric cancer is a cause close to the hearts of many, including Mrs. McDonough, who started doing THON at Penn-State due to the passing of a friend in high school from pediatric cancer. Students on the Mini-THON team also establish a life-long relationship with a family being affected by pediatric cancer, which is a once in a lifetime experience. Overall, Mini-THON is an event that fights to help find a cure for cancer and help families affected by it, all while having fun. Mrs. McDonough added, “It’s an experience that you don’t get often. It’s really neat to see all the different grades coming together for one common cause.” Mini-THON is considered by all involved to be a worthwhile event to attend that students and families remember for years to come, and all students are welcomed and encouraged to join.
