By Aleyna Orth Although hockey is not one of the more popular high school sports, the Wilson Ice Hockey team is not to be slept on. Wilson’s hockey team is a club sport, but showcases the hockey talent that is at Wilson. Due to the small amount of people that play hockey, Wilson’s ice hockey team is combined with Schuylkill Valley’s ice hockey team, which only adds more power to the team’s overall performance. This season, one Wilson player in particular is stealing the show. Not only is senior Josh Watterson leading the team in points and assists, but he is also third in the Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Hockey League for points, with 3 goals and 5 assists.
Watterson is no stranger to the ice. Currently in his 13th year of playing hockey, Josh has been playing for the school team and for travel teams since age 5. When he was younger, he would watch the Flyers play and decided he wanted to do the same thing. Starting with the Junior Royals, then the Berks Bruins, and finally the Central Penn Panthers, the team he is currently playing for, Josh has had a lot of practice to become the hockey player he is today. Josh has also been called up to play for the Syracuse Stampede, a tier III Junior A ice hockey team in the North American 3 Hockey League, several times. With 16 points for Central Penn so far this season, Josh is close to leading his travel team in points as well, but comes in at a close second. With his senior year coming to an end, Josh has begun to look towards the future. “I know that after I graduate, I’m still going to be playing junior hockey. Other than that, I’m not entirely decided yet. I’m still making decisions about what I want to do with hockey.” said Watterson when asked about the future of his hockey career. Wilson/SV ended their game Dec. 11 with a 6-3 victory over Daniel Boone, one of the goals scored by Watterson, and three of them assisted by Watterson. On Jan. 2, Wilson/SV ruined Twin Valley’s perfect record by ending the game in a 1-1 tie. They are currently in 4th place in the EPSHL. Wilson’s next game will be at Santander Arena on Wednesday, January 25th at 7:30 pm against Berks Catholic.
