By John Marino On November 8th, 2016, the 45th president of the United States was elected. Donald J. Trump surprised the polls and defeated former Madame Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton in a tense election with an abnormal amount of personal attacks. Before the general election, it was anticipated that Trump could win if the majority of traditionally Democratic states “flipped” to support the Republican candidate instead. This was proven to be true at the conclusion of election night, when Trump won with a total of 290 electoral votes compared to Hillary Clinton’s 232, according to Fox News. According to CNN, Trump was lacking support in states such as Minnesota, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania. As the night kicked off, many of these states’ votes were too early to call, and led to long waiting times to see who would come out as the victor. Trump wound up with leads in these vital states, many of which had a long history of supporting Democrats. Trump’s victory demonstrated change in American politics throughout the world. Trump was unlikely to become the Republican party’s nominee during the primaries. However, he surprised the establishment by becoming the presidential candidate anyhow. As Republicans noticed he would be their candidate, they rallied behind him and gave him support. In addition, this election cycle did not only show Americans’ anger with Washington, but it showed how they were angry at current president Barack Obama. Fox News reported that 51% of voters did not approve of the job he was doing, and 49% did. The results also demonstrated the blue collar workers voices in this election. Blue collar workers are workers within lower socioeconomic brackets. According to businessinsider.com, many of these people have been laid off or lost employment due to outsourcing. As Trump used rhetoric about bringing jobs such as the coal industry back to America, this may have caused him to gain support throughout the blue collar industry. Not only will Trump preside as the leader of America, he will be the president with Republican majorities in the House and Senate. This will allow Trump to be able to work with Congressmen on his side for the next two years. As a result, proposed policies of Trump will be more likely to be brought to light. For example, according to the Trump campaign, they will repeal parts of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, within their first 100 days in office. 54% of Americans disapproved of the act, which was enacted in the 2010. In addition, Trump as president has repeatedly said he will appoint a conservative judge to the Supreme Court due to Justice Scalia’s death.

Great coverage. I would love to read something about Trump and the appointments he is making for his cabinet.
