By Aleyna Orth The Wilson district underwent sudden change in February when Wilson’s former Superintendent Curtis D. Baker was placed on paid administrative leave and eventually resigned. This decision came shortly after a state auditor general’s report accused Baker of “lack of oversight” and “poor administrative judgment” in his previous position as superintendent of Moon Area School District. Board President Steve Ehrlich stated that while the report was unfair to Baker, it created a distraction that could not be overlooked by officials. On February 22, 2017, Curt Baker officially agreed to resign. On March 1, 2017, Cynthia Mierzejewski, Wilson School District’s Assistant Superintendent, began serving her transitional role as the acting superintendent. Dr. Mierzejewski had been the Assistant Superintendent of Wilson since April 2015, making the move up to acting Superintendent that much easier. Mierzejewski stated that the administration had come right to her to take the position, and she began almost immediately. Mierzejewski will remain the acting superintendent of Wilson until May 26 and will begin her new position as superintendent of Schuylkill Valley on May 30. With the fact that three administrators have left the district to accept positions at other schools recently, Mierzejewski’s sudden transition to another school district raised some questions amongst students and residents of the district. However, Mierzejewski confirmed that she had been working towards receiving the position at Schuylkill Valley since December of 2016 - before Curt Baker had resigned. She explained that there was no bad blood between her and the district, adding that she lives in the district, her children attended Wilson and the district has always treated her well. Dr. Warren F. Mata, the current Superintendent at Schuylkill Valley School District, stated that Mierzejewski’s previous experience working with curriculum and professional development will be a big asset. Dr. Mata added that Mierzejewski is widely respected throughout the county for her career. Dr. Mierzejewski began her career as a chemistry teacher for 13 years before moving onto high school administration for five years. She then was an asset at the Berks County Intermediate Unit, where she met many other administrators and worked with 18 schools to write curriculum, which she confirmed that she “loves to do.” Most recently, she has been the Assistant Superintendent of Wilson as of April 2015 and is continuing to move up. When asked about her plans for the district before leaving, Dr. Mierzejewski stated that the current focus is on budget issues, as well as ensuring that the district will have adequate staffing for the 2017-2018 school year. “We just need to hold it together for a few months, right?” she joked. Mierzejewski appears to be accepting the position of acting Superintendent graciously, putting it simply: “When there is change, there is change."
